memoria –casting a gaze 19 July - 19 October, 2008
Miscellaneous subjects such as environment, history, society, nature and human self , engage our attention in some way or other, when our gaze on them would be cast toward our memories. Every era, society and human beings employ imaginative energy to build future vision and set forth. In attempting this, their varied experiences, lore and memories are fundamental to opening up a new stage. This exhibition introduces contemporary artists from home and abroad to focus on visions of societies, memories of experiences, regarding a museum as an apparatus to transcend time and space, and sets our gaze to be stretched out to a universal sphere. It also spotlights Kumamoto Exposition held in Kumamoto, 1935, which attracted more than 1 million people, and probes how memories of individuals and societies have been formed and passed down to others, and to the following generations.
