CAMK Collection Exhibition Vol. 7
Memory Storage for the Future

April 29(Sat)-June 25(Sun), 2023

For many people, an art museum may be "the place to go to see exhibitions.” However, in addition to holding exhibitions, art museums continue to play a variety of other roles, one of the most important of which is “collection and archives”.
The collection policy of Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto includes the following criteria: "works by local artists," "outstanding works presented at important international exhibitions," and "works by artists featured in our exhibitions.” This CAMK Collection Exhibition Vol. 7 is structured to correspond with these collection policies, and introduce the essence of our collection, including works that tell the story of local art history from various aspects, commissioned works created by internationally active artists for exhibitions in Kumamoto, and works by young artists that reflect the current situation of the times in recent years.
All exhibitions disappear after their exhibition period are over. However, by incorporating some of the exhibited works into the museum's collection, the memories of these projects and works will continue to be shared not only by those who were present at the time of each exhibition, but also by those who will live 10 or 20 years after the exhibition and even further into the future. It can be said that these projects and works become "part of us" through the public collection. The museum collection is a kind of memory storage that is passed down through the ages, and it is an entity that forms the identity of the region.
Through this collection exhibition, we hope to trace the cultural memories that have been accumulated over the past 20 years of CAMK's activities, and to reconfirm the significance of the public collection.
